Ben Schlesinger for Newton School Committee - Ward 5

WE WON!

I’m thrilled to report, for anyone who hasn’t heard, that we scored a decisive victory. I am honored that the people of Newton have chosen me to serve on the next School Committee, starting on January 1, 2026. I’ll be joined by an exceptional team of colleagues: Arrianna Proia, Linda Swain, Jason Bhardwaj, Tamika Olszewski, Jonathan Greene, Alicia Piedalue, Victor Lee, and our new Mayor, Marc Laredo. I can’t wait to get to work.

“I’ve got debts that no honest man can pay…”
~Bruce Springsteen, Atlantic City*

Throughout the campaign, I’ve been humbled by the support of so many friends and family across the city. I can’t thank you enough for offering endorsements, hosting events, contributing funds, sending emails, tending to lawn signs, writing and signing letters to editors and emails to friends, staffing event booths, introducing me to friends, and standing out in the cold with signs yesterday. Literally hundreds of people worked together to pave the way to 9396 votes. I will do my best to serve our kids, our schools and our city in a way that will make you all proud.

A few people need special thanks, starting with Iris, Noah and Julia, who graciously excused my consistent absences from our family dinners and my persistent mental focus on all things election. You were all troopers and I appreciate your patience. My friend and Treasurer Ben Tuttman took care of the money and the legal stuff with masterful competence, especially for a rookie. My father, Alan, sent hundreds of emails and phone calls to a network built over decades of civic involvement. And my mom, Susan, made sure I didn’t work too hard or lose perspective.

My opponent, Jenna Miara, is a thoughtful and dedicated parent who demonstrated her dedication to the city and the schools. We didn’t agree on every issue and it was good that we gave the city a legitimate contest of ideas. I respect how hard she worked and how deeply she cares and I have let her know my door is always open to her.

I’ll use this newsletter as a forum to keep the community updated on the issues we’re tackling on the School Committee, I hope you’ll stay plugged in.

Lawn Sign Collection

Our team is going to start collecting lawn signs. If you’re able to drop yours off with a note (paper or electronic) at 25 Ferncroft Rd. (right off Beacon St. in Waban, by Zervas), that would be fantastic. If you’d like to keep yours for a memento (?) or for my next race, you’re welcome to bring it inside and let me know. Otherwise, we will get there as soon as we can. We were 100% focused on winning the race so it may take us a day or two to get a plan together here.

Your Messages

I’ve received hundreds of texts, emails, social media messages and exactly three phone calls (welcome to 2025… thank you Mayor Fuller, Mayor-elect, Laredo and buddy Gaurav Tuli!). They all mean a lot and I’m going to reply to every one. It will take some time, but know that I received and appreciate your message.

Thank you again. It will be an honor to represent you.

~Ben

* Noah is on a Springsteen kick; his guitar and singing has been the soundtrack of my campaign desk work. I could do worse.
